Roseanne –

When I first heard the grave news that Roseanne’s show was cancelled by ABC because of a racist remark, I thought oh no,  Now what? What are people getting all hot and bothered about now?!

Weeeell, She deserved to get flack for her comment, she should not have made it and she knows it, but to cancel her show? Really? I wonder what is going through the networks minds these days?  A person can’t say boo and they’re running like scared rabbits.  Where is that coming from?

To be honest, I don’t like the show in the first place.  It involves a lot of yelling and inconsiderate and demeaning comments from everyone to anyone. Granted the underlying sentiment is that despite disagreements and differing opinions, they still love one another… or so I’ve been told. I don’t think I’ve ever sat through a whole episode. To begin with, I don’t watch anything with histrionics in it so no, I don’t even like the popular Modern Family either.  It’s too hectic.

I think too, what bugs me the most is that if she’d slurred the president, Christ, Christians,  a white person or even a Republican, she could have gotten away with it. Neither ABC nor any other station would care enough about them to yank a show over it. Yet, that’s where we’re at these days.

I am not fond of Roseanne, but I think she got a bad rap here.  Perhaps because she gets away with it on her show, she believed she could in real life, I don’t know.  I don’t know what is going on here, but people seem to be quite edgy about what others say or do (though I can see removing someone from a project for convicted offenses).  I certainly would not have thought her comment to be a reflection of ABC or any other station nor that of the show and it’s cast.

You may think I’m off base, but everything else seems to be sacrosanct but those designations I mentioned above.  I mean, people might talk back and complain about it but no show would ever get yanked for anyone making fun of Trump or Christians and they do all the time. Am I wrong?

To be honest, I am not a fan of comedy or comics in general because, in my opinion most of it seems to involve laughing at and the ridicule of someone at the victims expense.  Yes, I was made fun of a lot in school and so perhaps I’m hyper sensitive, but … it often gets out of hand.

I wouldn’t want to be the butt of anyone’s joke or derisive remarks. Maybe I’m thin-skinned too. I am more fond of “do unto others as you would have done to yourself” and by golly, think good thoughts and love your neighbor.

So, in the future (if you even have one now) Roseanne, stop and think and remember “freedom of speech” does not apply to you.  I was taught “It is best to keep one’s mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt” – or as the  Proverbs of Solomon 17:28 says: “Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.”

Mostly folks, if we’ve learned nothing else by this, remember, “if you can’t say something nice, it’s best to not say anything at all.”

“And that’s all I have to say about that!”

  3. I can’t help but feel for the whole cast and crew that also lost their jobs. It seems like there would have been more consideration for them. I can’t imagine the effort it took to get this cast back together and then poof. They must be steaming mad.

    1. I agree. That has been happening often and it’s unfair. My feeling is that these “yankings” are inconsistent. What determines who or what is appropriate and why does one subject carry more weight than another? It should be fair and across the board.

    1. I’m not sure that she’s meanness so much as careless with her thoughts and words. For so many years, she got paid to be a calloused, outspoken bitch that she’s become that. I think she thought she could still get away with speaking her mind. My daughter has an acerbic tongue, but she’s really the nicest, caring person you could ever want to meet, but sometimes when she opens her mouth, you’d wonder. If you called her on it, she’s usually very shame-faced about it. Jerry Lewis appeared to be the nicest guy ever, but he was an ass. So one never knows.

  5. I don’t watch TV, so I won’t comment on Roseanne’s show. The extreme reactions to everything under the sun are what concern me. The majority of Americans used to be polite and considerate. No more, at least not the ones I read about in the newspaper. I am sickened by the rabid things people shout. They don’t stop at ranting, but seem to feel they have a right to physically injure others who don’t agree with them. It is people like this who are steering our country toward destruction. I’m very thankful I’ve never met one of these in person.

  6. You are fortunate and I agree with you wholeheartedly and that was my intention in writing this. Everyone needs to stop and think. It is sad too that people’s indignation is not so much of a moral nature so much as what is popular. Most people don’t even realize it. That is why I mentioned the things people never seem to get hot and bothered by when at one time they may have, many years ago.
    But… just because that’s true, does not give anyone the right to lash out and there’s too much of that going on these days and not much of it is rational. I’m not just referring to Roseanne because I can think of a million barbs that have been spat out on the subjects I referred to that no one seems to give a hoot about. I think sometimes people get frustrated and say things without thinking. What was her trigger, we all have a trigger. I get that, but words in anger are never profitable and because someone does, It isn’t necessarily who they are deep inside.
    I think we need to forgive and move on.

  7. I didn’t watch the new show, but I do remember that her voice used to get on my nerves. I’m with you about not liking hectic, ridiculing shows (except for the Big Bang Theory). I read Roseanne admitted to being in under the influence of ambien when she made the comment. I’m guessing she was difficult to work with and that might have been a factor in cancelling the show. It’s just a hunch.

      1. I’ve felt I need to for a long time. You faithfully contribute here so much, I was feeling it just wasn’t right. While we obviously connect with cycling, I just felt most of your posts didn’t fit with me on a personal level. Until this one. I’ve stopped by plenty of times in the past, I just didn’t want to do a fly by liking of your posts. That didn’t seem right either.

        I am truly grateful for you.

  10. You are not off base. Hiring and firing decisions aren’t made on moral principles but rather on financial principles by some very risk averse people. If enough people raise a big enough stink they’ll get a heckler’s veto because there aren’t enough “pro-racist comment people” to raise an equivalent counter-stink.

    The pendulum swings. When I was a kid, few of the programs on television today would ever have made it past the censor’s desk. Roseanne’s comment wouldn’t have even been noticed. Free speech has never extended into the private sector. It is only government that can’t (rather, “isn’t supposed to”) punish you for what you say and even that hasn’t been true for all that long.
